From 1933 to 1935, Shearer worked with Lansing to develop a system of angular speakers to improve sound in cinemas. The system was so powerful that the academy of motion picture arts and sciences awarded it a technical excellence award in 1936. In the early 1980s, JBL's loudspeaker system gained widespread acceptance in the Hollywood creative industry. JBL has long been the number one speaker supplier in the cinema industry worldwide.

The birth of JBL Synthesis system in 1983 expanded JBL's dominance in film art and technology into the home entertainment space.

The SYNTHESIS team helped establish the THX standard for the LUCAS FILM in 1983, the same year "Star Wars: episode iii" won an Oscar for best sound.
